How It Is Important To Acknowledge And Let Go Of Your Past

“Forgetting is hard but remembering is the worst, living in the past is not a good choice.” Ring a bell? Had any idea what this is all about? Past, yes… could be something we want to remember or forget. Do you reminisce about all the good things and the bad things that happened in your past? Good things that you never want to forget because those moments are priceless and bad things that you want to bury, wishing that they never happened. Past is an action, situation, or event that happened or existed before the present time. This is something we cannot change unless we have a time machine to at least undo all the things that we don’t want to remember but cannot. Have you ever wished to undo or redo things in your life? Me too.

I remember those lines from the movie I watched on Netflix entitled The Woman Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, the main Character Anna stated “When your past is so present, how can there be a future? There can’t. You’re just stuck in the present with your past.” It’s true though. Most of us are having a hard time moving forward or getting out of our comfort zone because we are afraid of change, we don’t want to move along with something we are not familiar with. So rather than moving forward, we chose to stick ourselves in the present with our past. We carry those things even if it just causes us to suffer, I do the same thing. I’m carrying the trauma that people caused me. I am afraid of embracing unfamiliar things, I choose to live in the past even though it’s already gone. I’m reliving the past through literary pieces, I write about them, I talked about them, imagining that they are still here, that they never left. I am afraid to face the present without them, that’s why it’s hard for me to create a brighter tomorrow because no matter what I do, wherever I go, I carry the ghost with me. It’s painful like you have this void that you need to fill every day so it won’t eat you alive. I just wish I have this pill that I can take so that when I wake up tomorrow, I’m not carrying the trauma from the past. I am not saying that the past should be forgotten, it’s just that the past should be learned but not become our punishment.

If you are one of the people who still live in the past, I guess it is time for you to move forward. You don’t need to be afraid of facing new things, because how are you going to succeed if you are afraid of risks. What happened in your past should not define you, you are not your trauma or the things that have happened to you but you are responsible for the things you will do. Start letting go of that extra baggage you carry on your way to the brighter future, you cannot change things that have happened but you can do something tomorrow that will make you better. What happened in the past already happened, you just have to accept it and let go of the grudges.
