Don’t Chase Your Dreams

There are dreams that are not meant for you to chase, instead of chasing them, you must make them happen. Those dreams make up our core as humans. It is in our nature to look up to something; hence, we dream. We dream of stable jobs after graduation, we dream of tranquil mental health after we receive our diplomas, and we dream of letting go of our pain after exiting our alma mater. Whatever your dream is, do not chase it. Make your dream happen.

But how can you do that? The simplest answer would be to study a lot and finish it! However, this answer has underlying complexities wherein studying a lot, especially now, is harder to do, so what more of finishing it? There is this joke in Filipino that says, “Kung edukasyon ang susi ng tagumpay, sino ba kasi ang nag-lock ng tagumpay? [in translation: If education is the key to success, who locked success?]. This joke pertains to how difficult it is to finish your education to attain your own success. Many students favor shortcuts and they look forward to seeing more shortcuts as they continue their studies. However, there is no shortcut to success. We must all suffer together with all of the sleepless nights that we allot to finish all of our pending tasks and with all of the draining mornings due to coercing every piece of information to enter our brains. All of these sufferings will be worth it soon!

For now, as we look forward to something we want, let us acknowledge how tiring the path is and how crucial every step we have to take on this path. No matter how challenging it is before we have our dreams, let us be guided that achieving our dreams is not a marathon where you need to be the first placer runner. It is an investment towards fulfillment; hence, we have to be realistic by managing our goals in smarter and more efficient ways. When we start to have a clearer vision in life using realistic goals and expectations, we are also starting to realize that our dreams are not meant to be chased.
